Gifts for a Cigar Smoker

What to buy when you don't smoke cigars yourself, and where to find it in Tulsa.

5 min read

Buying a gift for a cigar smoker is easier than it looks, even if you've never smoked one. The best move is to walk into a local shop and tell the person behind the counter who the gift is for. They do this all day, especially in November and December, and they'll steer you away from the things that sit in a drawer.

Before you shop, one rule. You have to be 21 to buy cigars in the United States, and the person receiving them should be too.

Cigars

Find out what he already smokes. A box or a five-pack of his usual cigar is never the wrong gift. Snap a picture of the band on the next one he smokes, or ask the shop he goes to. Regulars are often known by name.

A sampler. If you don't know his taste, a sampler of several cigars lets him try new things. Ask the shop to put one together around something he already likes, such as "mild and creamy" or "dark and sweet."

Something he can't find everywhere. A limited release or a cigar rolled right here in Tulsa by Ultimo Cigars makes the gift feel chosen instead of grabbed.

Tools he'll use every time

A good cutter. A sharp double-blade cutter is one of the most useful gifts you can give, and a nicer one lasts for years. Our guide to cutting and lighting a cigar explains the different styles.

A torch lighter. Butane torch lighters stay lit in the wind, which matters on an Oklahoma patio. Throw in a can of good butane, since it's the first thing he'll need.

A travel case. A hard case that holds a few cigars protects them in a jacket pocket or a golf bag.

An ashtray. A heavy ceramic or glass cigar ashtray with wide rests is a practical gift for the porch or the man cave.

Bigger gifts

A humidor. If he keeps cigars in the box they came in, a humidor is a real upgrade. Buy bigger than you think he needs, and add humidity packs and a hygrometer. Our guide to buying your first humidor walks through what to look for.

A rolling class. Ultimo Cigars offers cigar rolling classes and custom blends in Tulsa. It's a gift he'll talk about for years, and it works well for a group.

A lounge membership. Several Tulsa lounges offer memberships for regulars. The Cigar Box runs one called The Box Club. Ask at his favorite lounge what theirs includes.

The easy way out

A gift card to his favorite shop or lounge is a perfectly good gift. Pair it with a nice bottle he can enjoy alongside a cigar and you're done.

Where to shop in Tulsa

All of our Tulsa cigar shops stock gifts and accessories. Tulsa Hills Cigar Cellar & Market is built around it, with a market of bar and home goods alongside the humidor. Shop early in the season, since popular cutters and limited cigars tend to sell out close to Christmas.
